Introduction
Did you know that the beloved Idli isn’t originally from India? As we celebrate World Idli Day on March 30th, let’s dive into the fascinating history and health benefits of this South Indian staple that has captured hearts (and taste buds) across the world.
The Surprising Origin of Idli
While Idli is synonymous with South Indian cuisine, its roots can be traced back to Indonesia. According to K.T. Acharya, a renowned food scientist and historian from Karnataka, Idli originated between the 7th and 12th centuries in present-day Indonesia, where it was known as ‘Kedli’ or ‘Kedari’. During this period, many Hindu kings ruled Indonesia. When these kings traveled to India—either to visit relatives or find brides—they brought their royal chefs along. These chefs introduced the Indonesian recipe of Kedlis to India, which gradually evolved into the Idli we know and love today.
